    Metrolink Commuter Train Crash

    On September 12, 2008, Metrolink train #111 carrying 225 passengers collided head on with a Santa Fe cargo train loaded with fresh strawberries. The crash happened in the Southwest San Fernando Valley neighborhood called Chatsworth. Twenty-five people were killed, including Metrolink engineer, Robert Sanchez. More than 135 others were injured. National Transportation Safety Board investigators later said Sanchez caused the accident by running a red light. Cell phone records indicate Sanchez was texting immediately before the crash. Read More | Comments

    Federal regulators reopened IndyMac Federal Bank Bank this morning for the first time since shutting down its 33 branches over the weekend. Nervous depositors made a run on the bank last week after word leaked about its credit problems related to the subprime mortgage meltdown. Customers were, again, forming long lines before sunrise. They were eager to withdraw whatever they could. Larry Mantle interviewed several banking experts and went live with Patricia Nazario as she spoke to depositors waiting outside the bank’s Encino branch.

    Lake Arrowhead Wildfire

    California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President George W. Bush declared a state of emergency in seven counties where wildfires are burning out of control. The flames spread from Santa Barbara to San Diego, including a pair of aggressive brushfires in the mountainous Lake Arrowhead resort town. The governor touched down in a helicopter and toured the region this morning. He spoke to reporters afterward and Patricia Nazario was there. Talk show host Patt Morrison spoke to Patricia about Schwarzenegger’s visit.
